On the other hand, if you were to assess an essay based solely on its topics and passages, it is highly likely that you would be missing the point entirely. If you want to truly understand the students' essay on the topic, the reader's motive for writing is going to be the first thing you are going to look at.This is why you must look to the readers' motivations for writing. For example, it may be that the student is trying to illustrate some aspect of their own life or a specific thing about the p erson they are talking about, which in turn is the point of the essay.It may also be that the student is trying to get past a reading comprehension test. Sometimes, a student does a lot of work to prepare for a test and it is completely impossible for them to make any sense out of their own essay on topic. In these cases, you must look for the aspects of the essay that will provide a better view of the writer's intent.Look for specific events that are connected to the subject matter of the essay. An event may relate to the story, the student is attempting to create. Another event may have direct bearing on the topic, but you may be surprised at how well they connect in your mind.One other aspect of the particular event that you may want to look at is how the writer describes their experiences with that particular event. How did they handle themselves, how did they react to it, and how did they change the story after the event?A valuable way to go about this process is to first deter mine the importance of each event that is listed in the essay. To do this, look for some type of effect the student had upon the event. This could mean that they experienced a loss or a gain, changed their attitude or perspective, or used that experience to become a better person.
